MS Dhoni, the former captain for the Indian national cricket team, will soon return to the Team India dugout. However, this time around he will be a mentor for the upcoming T20 World Cup that will take place from 17 October until 14 November where the final will be played in Dubai.
BettingPro reporters have recently uncovered that the announcement from the BCCI on the inclusion of Dhoni took several of the office-bearers by surprise. In fact, even the selectors learned about this move only minutes before the announcement was made in a press conference to include Dhoni in the squad for the tournament in the UAE that will take place between October and November.
Key Factors Behind the Decision
Multiple sources have confirmed that the dismal white-ball record for India in ICC events under coach Ravi Shastri and captain Virat Kohli is one of the key factors for the decision to include MS Dhoni in the squad. The Indian cricket team have either failed to make it over the final hurdle or fallen short to reach the final in 50-over World Cups, World T20, and the Champions Trophy. Kohli has also failed to lead the Royal Challengers Bangalore to a titles in the IPL.
MS Dhoni, who is leading Chennai Super Kings, has managed to bring home 3 major ICC trophies, including World Cup, Champions Trophy, and World T20. He is also a three-time IPL-winning captain, making him the perfect mentor for the Indian cricket team in the T20 World Cup. At a Wednesday media briefing, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah stated that the decision to call on country’s most-renowned white-ball cricket and the 40-year old retired international was taken after he went to Dubai to meet MS Dhoni where IPL teams began converging to finish the incomplete Covid-hit Season 12.
Everyone is Excited About the Reunion
The BCCI is extremely hopeful that MS Dhoni will assist Kohli to finally figure out the white-ball code. There is no other player in the world that can guide the Indian cricket team better than MS Dhoni. He comes equipped with loads of experience and everyone in the team trusts him. His presence alone will assist players in the dugout and support staff. A BCCI official stated that Jay Shah felt that MS Dhoni is the only player who can assist the team throughout the T20 World Cup and it’s for this reason why he was called out of retirement.
Besides, with the tenure of Shastri ending once the T20 World Cup draws to an end, and the BCCI not renewing his contract, the appointment of Dhoni works perfectly as a stop-gap arrangement until a better replacement can be made. Since the BCCI didn’t want to replace the coach with someone new before a vital T20 event, they opted in for a trusted old hand who has a working relationship with the team and management that is currently in charge of the team.
